Otago & Southland

The Otago and Southland regions cover the south eastern seaboard of the South Island.

Dunedin, is a university city that boasts the best preserved Victorian and Edwardian hertiage in the Southern Hempishere.  Known for its art, fashion and historic buildings it really is a must stop and see.

Otago Peninsula as the world's only mainland albatross breeding cology at Taiaroa Head and various ocean bird, seals and penguin species, especially the worlds rarest, the yellow eyed penguin can be seen on various tours within this region.  David Bellamy was quoted as saying "In my opinion, the Otago Peninsula is the finest example of Eco-Tourism in the world".

The rugged hinterland can be accessed via the Taieri Gorge Railway which links visitors to Middlemarch and the Otago Central Rail Trail where from the cliff tops you see spectacular views of Port Chalmers and the Pacific Ocean on the Seasider route.

Moving down from Otago you enter into Southland the most southern and western part of New Zealand.  Here you will enjoy a diverse country views ranging from high alpine moutains and glaciers to intensively farmed lush grasslands on rolling plains.

Farming, forestry and horticulture form the regions economic base and the citizens boast that it has the most "unspoilt nature that allows one to restore their souls".

We suggest spending 1.5 days in this region unless you are into Eco-Tourism then we would suggest adding an extra day.
