Rotorua & Bay of Plenty
Welcome to the geo-thermal wonderland of Rotorua. During the 19th century visitor’s flocked to see what was touted as the 8th wonder of the world … The Pink and White Terraces. But beneath the gently floating steam, the bubbling mud of Rotorua let’s you know of the extreme earth forces at play.
When Mt Tarawera erupted in 1886 it buried the famous terraces and much of the surrounding countryside. But from the ashes Rotorua rose again to become one of the most visited areas in New Zealand with the town constructed around an abundance of natural hot springs and thermal areas … even the locals take advantage of this alternative form of energy to heat their homes and cook with.
From the geothermal wonders and gorgeous lake-land scenery, to the rich Maori culture and a myriad of visitor activities … Rotorua will keep you entertained for days with a wide range of activities that are not just geo-thermal activity.
From thrill seeking … to hands on New Zealand farm experience, and of course the chance to immerse yourself in this country’s vibrant Maori culture and explore a Hangi a local Maori custom of cooking their food. It’s easy to see why Rotorua as a destination is one of the most popular tourist towns in the North Island.
Ubooktrip suggests 1.5 days with a stay over is ideal if you are wishing to incorporate the South Island in your trip. If you are doing the North Island only then we recommend three days and incorporate Taupo as well (an hours drive away).
